Outdoor family fun goes digital (Sept 2014)

Rangers at Moors Valley Country Park & Forest near Ringwood are now using social media to help families get the most out of the great outdoors at weekends.

Every Friday the Rangers post a Family Fun Friday activity sheet on Twitter and Facebook (and on the Moors Valley website) suggesting simple games, activities and crafts for families to do outside at weekends. Some are seasonal, some can be done all year round, some are just for fun and some explore our natural surroundings and can benefit wildlife. Ideas include snail racing, meeting a tree, making a boat out of leaves, building a den, going on a night walk and even making smelly cocktails.

The activities don’t have to be done at Moors Valley – they can be done in almost any outdoor space, including back gardens and local parks, and most don’t involve any complicated equipment or preparation.

Moors Valley Rangers are passionate about the outdoors and they have developed hundreds of activities over the years to help people of all ages experience nature. The launch of Family Fun Fridays allows them to spread their sense of fun as widely as possible and help families spend quality time together outside even if they can’t get to the Park.

Katie Davies, Countryside Information Ranger at Moors Valley said, “Families don’t get out and about nearly as much as they used to. Family Fun Fridays are our way of helping them to have fun and improve their wellbeing at the same time. For the next 12 months we will be posting a new activity sheet each week building to 52 great ways to have fun outdoors whatever the weather.”

All you need to do to receive Family Fun Friday activity sheets is to follow Moors Valley on Twitter (@moorsvalley), visit their Facebook page, or go to www.moors-valley.co.uk/letsgowild
