Fantastic facts in focus at Family Fungi Foray (Oct 2013)

A special event at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood, will offer families the chance to discover some amazing facts about the fantastic fungi growing in the forest during the wet and mild autumn months.

With approximately 12,000 species in the UK, there is a lot to learn about the amazing diversity of fungi that thrive in the woodland, grassland and heathland areas.

Fungi enthusiast Forestry Commission Head Ranger Andrew Norris will lead the family-friendly foray. He said, “I am really looking forward to introducing people to the wide variety of fungi at Moors Valley Country Park. It’s a great chance to see some of the our brightly coloured toadstools and to share some fascinating facts about the more unusual varieties.”

The event that runs from 10am to 11.30m on Sunday 13 October costs just £3 per person and is a fun, interactive walk aimed at beginners. It is open to all ages but children must be accompanied and able to walk two miles. It is not suitable for pushchairs. Booking is essential.

The Forestry Commission has produced a Fungi Collectors Code to promote responsible foraging in the forest, which can be found at www.forestry.gov.uk
