Ranger Sessions: Woodland wisdom

Bushcraft Day

A bushcraft day is set around your wishes. They can last between four and six hours depending on the number of activities you wish to cover. In an average six hour session we can cover approximately four activities.

Building Base Camp
Using ponchos children will construct temporary shelters to make camp for the day.

Traditional Fire Lighting Skills
Children will have the opportunity to step back in time and learn traditional fire lighting methods used from the Stone Age and Iron Age up to the modern day.

Tracking Skills
Learn how to track animals looking at footprints, then children can set and follow their own trails using the skills learnt.

Natural Cordage
Nettles are a great material for providing us with natural fibres, children will make string to take home.

Back County Cooking
Children can collect food from our organic vegetable patch then prepare and cook their own stew over an open fire or make beans and bread dippers.

Time: from 4 hours
Maximum group size: 16
Key stage: Year 4 upwards
Cost: From £128.00 (£12.00 per child)

Natural Shelter Building

A test of ingenuity and teamwork. The group is split into smaller teams (usually 5 or 6). The challenge is to build a shelter from materials they can find on the forest floor which the whole team can get into and which can survive a rain shower (provided by the Rangers at the end of the session!).
This can be run as a 2 hour or whole day activity. On the longer session more time can be spent looking at different designs for shelters, factors in siting the shelter and survival strategies. Offered during June and July.

Time: 2-4 hours
Maximum group size: 16
Key stage: 2+
Cost: £64.00 – £128.00 (£4 to £8 per child)
